Google’s local ranking algorithm is unknowable. With countless hidden factors influencing search results (thanks to leaked documents) ranking is always challenging. Some may think this is a reason to leave it up to chance, but it’s not. In this post we have 4 high-leverage actions you can take to give your local competition a run for their money.
Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. A combination of these factors helps us find the best match for your search.

Google views backlinks as endorsements. When a reputable local website links to yours, it’s like receiving a vote of confidence for your area. These backlinks inform Google that your website offers valuable content and should be ranked higher in local search.
Quality backlinks come from local websites with high authority. Think local press, news stations, blogs, business associations, chamber of commerce, sponsored events, etc.
So that’s great but how should I get these high-leverage backlinks?
Get creative. It’s just another transaction where you offer value in exchange for value. Write about your expertise for an outlet in need of content, pay for a spot in a local magazine with a web presence, etc.
It’s not an easy task but this is what will separate you from your competition in local search. This is worth much more than “optimizing keywords” or getting that “100 performance score” on PageSpeed Insights.
Having a solid GMB profile is non-negotiable. It doesn’t have to be perfect, the difference between a fully completed GMB and a “SEO optimized” GMB is not much. Just complete it fully and you will be ahead of the curve.
This means photos, Q&A, location, hours, description, etc. If Google asks for it and you can supply the information by all means do. Here is an example of a great looking GMB and one that needs some help.

Get your GMB looking sharp and your other SEO efforts will be 10x more productive in increasing your local ranking.
Reviews are more than just feedback. They’re a powerful tool to boost your local SEO. By showcasing positive reviews you signal to Google that your business is superior to competitors in your area.
To maximize the impact of reviews, consider implementing a “get review” checklist for every project. Treat it as seriously as any other service you provide. Don’t leave this crucial SEO booster to chance.
Happy customers are often eager to share their positive experiences. By consistently delivering exceptional service, you’ll encourage more customers to leave 5 star reviews. Never be afraid to ask and always ask for reviews.
Every page on your website is like a raffle ticket. The more tickets you have the higher your chances of winning. But it’s not just about quantity it’s about quality too.
A ticket with a strong relevant message and a clear call to action has a better chance of being drawn. Similarly, a well-optimized page with high-quality content and relevant keywords is more likely to rank higher in search engine results.
Blog. Imagine your blog as a ticket machine. Every post you write is a new ticket in the SEO raffle. The more tickets you have, the better your chances of winning a top spot in local search results.
Do these 4 things well and you will see the needle move. Stick to it and overtime your business will become the ranking leader in your area.
